I practice art-making primarily using clay and the craft required to bring a clay work into the world. Process leads to intention; content reveals itself at some point and fuels the manifestation of ideas and feelings. My practice encompasses a large inventory of actions: all manner of gestural manipulation of the material such as shaping by hand, by tools, by molding, drawing, mark-making, painting, glazing, using heat and flame, and time.

Clay is the mother of all physical art materials; humans used it first for utilitarian objects and to express the mysterious connections to the spirit world; they processed it with water, shaped it by hand, dried it in air and made it permanent with fire. I am a lover of history. The history of ceramics fascinates me. I feel a deep connection to humanity through this history. I endeavor to walk in the truth of the infinite way’s humans have used this material.  —Arnie Zimmerman
